Give me a proper name so i can label it.. hehehe. If you could research on their first names and their changing names (twice normally), that would be helpful. I've written it down already to all of these pictures however, i need to clarify them. I have heaps of old photos however, i'm putting this online because alot of us requested it. Sometimes, it's not only the lady in this picture but the boy in the background.

Hi.. A dutch guy came in the 1970s for a botanical research in Bario and also Mt. Murud. His name was Dr. Hans. He came to Malaysia mid last year and decided to give back the pictures he took during that time. More pictures "hopefully" come out. Depends if the Telecentre connection would be nice to me once in awhile.

Lots of money and buckets of sweat not to mention hopes burnt to ashes in the Ulung Palang Longhouse. Corner Lot and commanding view was the house of Penghulu Nepuunberuh-Maranlutu-Henry Jallatamalai and Late Cr. Rajangatan-Lawai Busan. The former father Of Rubin Jalla, Idris Jalla, Datin Garnette and the Later father of Dr.Philip Raja, Lilla Raja, Peter Raja, others. Quite a challenge to pedal bicycle up the slope and quite hazardous to cycle down especially on Rubin Jalla's brakeless bicycle. Surely Idris would have a few scrape 'shooting' the slope just for the fun of it or to ngeluit in the drain.

Picture of Bario Primary School circa 1970? (for verification should consult Dr. Paul Chai [ITTO] the photographer's friend) Notice the original school blocks built in 1964/1965.Headmaster Ngabi Aran-Raja Siwa-Roland Agan Kapong(Mustapha) The block in fore ground was built by Balang Petuan-Tama Kaang-Juman Matong dan rakan rakan including TK Raben Bawang-Balang Radu-Gia Ipang.(Pry 5-6 classes), The Long middle block (Pry 4,3,2) was built by Inan Diu-Ulit Matu-Agan Merang dan gabungan Pa Mada/Pa Main (Ulung Palang) and the back Block housing Pry 1 and staff room was built by TK Tepun Bawang-Tama Saging-Agan Ulun, Pun Besara-Mikat Bala-Anak Luang, and Doo Linuh - Lejau Unad. The Boarding house/Kitchen/mess hall in the back ground was built by Ngerawe Ulun-Barauk Batubala and his cousin Balang Radu 1966/67. Bala Metu-Nawan Bala and Balangngalibun-Robert Saging painted the building during december holidays 1967 gaji hari RM4.00/hari - cari belanja sekolah di SMK Marudi bah! Let it be known that the site for the school was cleared by the pry 5 & 6 1964 using tungul,Parang Bengkok and Kapak. Balametu,Balangalibun,Semeralangit,Balanglipang,Tom Rika, Bayaribuh(Malarn),Sina Tagongribuh,Sina Ketuanbala,Sina Rabenbala and many others were there. Our cikgu Nepuunberuh-Henry jalla,Mikatballang Isaac Ibuh, Ributepun David Lian, Maranayu Leju Ibuh,Paranribu Sagau Batuballa, Balanggerau Daud Iboh, Jali Ibuh and many others. However we still have to walk from the old school at Tamabu Parantejin's house in 1965 because the dormitory was not yet completed. Sadly Johnny,Nawan and Robert have to stay at the old school though our house is only a stone's throw away. This was on the directive of guru Roland Agan Rajasiwa because we were required to subsidise rice fee of 4.5 gantang/month each for some poor kids from far away kampong (Lg Seridan,Lg.Lellang,Lg Banga,Lg Peluan). Our poor mothers have to pound extra rice every month - this was Rajasiwa's system of caring for the unfortunate. Actual fee was 1 gantang/student. May God bless Rajasiwa. Hey guys just have to share some experience with you ok.

Pa Ukat?
Pa Lungan Longhouse in 1969. I spoke to Dr. Hans when he was here last year in Bario about the pictures that he took. I wanted to know exactly when he took them. He mentioned year 1969 always to me by his stories that he told me. When i corrected him with year 1970, he kinda said still year 1969. -I wonder if he has anymore pictures in his collections but could not have time to digitised them. It really took him some time to scan this pictures since it was from slide films.

Thank you Tamamu for your inputs of names. I will update it on the pictures here as descriptions. Furthermore, i still have more pictures to show later on since this page only limits me of 20 pictures at a time when i put it online.

Mrs Mala Ulun - Sina Adco Ribuh - Pun Paderah Ulun is on extreme right. The sad thing is that I did not know she'd passed on in May 2006 in Miri.(Her daughter Tepemu Ujan in Canada called last week and informed me, just as sad is that her husband uncle Mala Ulun - Adco Ribuh had also passed on ..on 19 July 2006 in Bario ...also I was informed by Tepemu Ujan Forrest.
Just for information, Ujan is the adopted daughter of this couple from Remudu where Uncle Mala Ulun was a Ketua Kampong in the 60's. Ujan married canadian Garry Forest in 1971? moved to Alberta Canada and have 2 daughters. From a humble beginings in Remudu and Bario Asal Lembaa and ofcourse Pa Main School, Bario Primary and Secondary School she made it through in Canada to become a prize winning produce manager in a super market and now a student activitycoordinator at a university in Alberta Canada. We kelabits should be proud of her, well I am.

I have worked with quite a few Kelabits in Shell Lutong. They did very well there. The most successful were Henry Lian and Idris Jala. There is a Kelabit living just up the road from my house in Hamilton, Helen Buang. She is working as a nurse with my wife at Waikato Health. They have also been colleagues at the Lutong clinic...
balangalibun wrote on Aug 28, '06
Thank you, aunt Helen Buang is another kelabit who's done excellently well. She is of humble beginings from PaMain 1960 when she left for primary 5 on an arduous 3week journey on foot and long boat to Long Lama (sudah lah long way away and took lama time at that) probably with only the clothes on her back and a few ringgits in her kelupit. For those who know her beginings Iam sure they'll agree. May I say New Zealand and a career there is he Rome for now, she'd got there by a different route. That is the point for kelabit people, there are many roads leading to Success (rome),what matter is how we get there. Me very proud of you auntie! Always.(I and uncle Panai never learnt how to dance cha cha like you!)
Hey Kelabits, God's grace is freely given to us in what ever ways we go to rome.Education is an equaliser available to us to enable us to compete in the world out there.
